Fall foliage and a good corn maze go hand in hand. One of the best corn mazes I have ever navigated is in nearby Guilford, Vermont at Gaines Farm.

The 5.5 acre maze is shaped like a giant cow, every bit what I would expect a Corn Maze in Southern Vermont to be shaped like. This Maze also offered a “Cornundrum” game, where using a map you search out 10 riddles in the maize, write down your answers and are entered to win a grand prize.

Tim had a blast playing with the Corn Cannon (pun intended). Hit the tire or ring the bell by shooting corn from a compressed air cannon and you win a hat. We walked away hat-less, but with big smiles instead. finally, we wrapped up this beautiful fall day with a cup of warm apple cider from the refreshment cart and a quick look at the animals in the barn.

You can enjoy these great events at Gaines Farm on weekends only from Columbus Day weekend through Halloween weekend. Hope you enjoy this short video. We look forward to showing you more of Southern Vermont and our great town of Brattleboro when you come stay with us at Forty Putney Road B&B.

The jack-o-lanterns line the streets of downtown Keene, set up on huge scaffolds. At night they are even illuminated, creating a spectacular glow of pumpkin colored light into the night. This event, like any good fall festival, is complete with craft and art vendors, live music and entertainment, fireworks and of course lots of great food (last year Tim unsuccessfully tried to eat his weight in cider donuts).

So carve your pumpkin and take it to the Keene Pumpkin Festival! Help them reach their world record goal this year of 29,000 pumpkins – topping their old world record which was just short of that. For lots of information about the festival and a schedule of this years event, check out www.pumpkinfestival.org.

So how does Gallery Walk work? You should start by getting a copy of the Gallery Walk booklet, if you are staying with us at Forty Putney Road B&B we will have one here waiting for you, if not they can be found at many locations downtown. The booklet contains a map with over 50 locations including restaurants, galleries, etc that will be displaying artists work and will be open to the public the first Friday of the month. Each of the businesses downtown showing an artist has a large bright colored number in the window. This number corresponds to a number in the Gallery Walk book which provides descriptions of the artists and the work that they are showing.

Gallery Walk makes for a great night out and downtown is often bustling with activity on the Friday of the Walk. Turn it into an evening. Make a reservation at one of the great restaurants downtown for dinner and before or after you can stroll through downtown Brattleboro wandering into the various exhibiting locations. Chances are good that even the restaurant you eat at will be showing someones work. Some locations will be playing live music and others will have refreshments set up. In most cases you will even have the opportunity to speak to the artist themselves. Of course the art is exhibited all month long, but with the artists on hand and the energy of the First Friday – Gallery Walk is the ideal time to see whats new.

Gallery Walk is just one more reason we love Brattleboro. If you plan to go, check out the Gallery Walk website for more information. Of course, be sure to also check out our beautiful Brattleboro Inn just a short walk to downtown and all of the Gallery Walk activity. We look forward to seeing you!
