Last week a crazy storm made her way through Brattleboro Vermont and much of New England. There were many small towns and villages seriously affected by the deluge of water and flooding. Our thoughts and hearts go out to them.

Downtown Brattleboro has fared well through the storm. The high water was concentrated to the area surrounding the normally tranquil Whetstone brook that runs through the bottom of downtown. The brook was running furiously, carrying water (and the occasional lawn chair) out to the Connecticut river. Much like pouring water too fast into a funnel, water backed up and saturated much of Flat Street, soaking basements of the Latchis Hotel and Flat Street Brew Pub as well as the shoe department of Sams.

However, in true Vermont fashion it was amazing to see how fast things began to clear up and clean up after the storm had passed. Just the next day the sun was out, it was a pleasant 70 degrees (as if the weather itself were apologizing) and the streets were filled with people eager to help these places back on their feet. As those who have been to Brattleboro know, the terrain (built on a steep hill, where one street is 3 stories higher than the next) helped prevent major downtown damage.

Even today, just 5 days later, Sams is already reopened (and talking of some good sales for the weekend), the Latchis Hotel is repairing the utilities that were damaged in the water and even Flat Street Brewpub is hoping to be open on the upper level quickly. Take a look at this photo gallery from just yesterday.

We write this post today to help squash the fears of many past, future and potential visitors who have been sweet enough to call, email and post to our Facebook page their concern for us and the Town of Brattleboro. Despite the portrayal by the media that Brattleboro was completely devastated and even removed from the map by the storm, most of the town is doing well and all of the town continues to need your support.

Brattleboro is open for business and there are still dozens of great places to eat, pubs to crawl, galleries to peruse and shops to browse in our vibrant downtown. This Friday is gallery walk (as is every First friday of the month) where shops, galleries and restaurants will be open late and music and art will fill the streets, bringing a sense of Brattleboro normalcy back to our resilient town.

The roads to Brattleboro are open and clear (exit 1, 2 or 3 off Route 91) and we invite you to come discover the little town that could.

Thank you for all of your messages and concern, it’s times like this that you remember why you became an innkeeper. We appreciate all of the kind thoughts and look forward to seeing you all again soon!

Cheers,

Tim and Amy
In 2007, when we left our corporate jobs to start Forty Putney Road Bed and Breakfast in Brattleboro, VT, we struggled to find a health care coverage option that would be affordable and not exclude existing conditions.

Now that we are settled in here, we hope to provide a healthy getaway to those who may be facing the same struggle with their own health care coverage by giving away one healthy getaway each month – complete with an apple a day – to an uninsured couple in need of some stress relief.

Vermont was recently named the “Healthiest State” in the 20th annual “Americas Health” ranking report. While a trip to Vermont is no substitute for good health care coverage, some time in Vermont is certainly beneficial for anyone, especially those dealing with the health issues or simply the stresses of being uninsured.

If you are one of the millions of Americans without health insurance, or are dealing with a health insurance disaster, we want to hear your story. Each month until a National Health Care Reform Bill is passed Forty Putney Road Bed and Breakfast will award one deserving couple with a rejuvenating two night getaway, including everything from beautiful accommodations to guided outdoor activities along with a healthy breakfast to start each day.

Please share this opportunity with anyone who you think may benefit from some time in Vermont.

At Forty Putney Road B&B, we are proud to have our large Japanese Maple included in the tour. The Maple was planted by the patients of the Vermont Asylum around 1930. In the 80 years since, it has grown to become one of the largest (if not the largest) Acer Palmatum in North America.

You can download a map and information about 9 of the trees on the tour (including our Maple) here as a PDF file. The Chamber also has some printed versions available.

Bob Audette from the Brattleboro Reformer recently covered the Tree Walk, here is an excerpt from their article:

People in the community submitted nominations for trees they thought should be included in the map, said Lynn Levine, project manager.

“It was a chance for the community to be involved in thinking about their trees,” she said.

“We did this because history has proven when people know about something they fall in love with it and take care of it,” said Helene Henry, chairwoman of the Tree Advisory Committee.

The committee received about 50 nominations from the community, said Levine.

Of the 22 trees featured on the walk, nine have descriptions written up in the map flyer. One of the nine, a tree located next to Wells

Fountain near Windham District Court, is a graft of a Camperdown Elm from Scotland, said Levine. Though she didn’t know when the elm was planted in Brattleboro, the original tree was planted in Scotland in the 1830s.Because the tree has an umbrella shape, said Levine, “It’s a great place for kids to hide.”

One of the more unusual discoveries for the committee, she said, was a small community space behind the American Red Cross building on High Street.

Several years ago, an ancient gravesite was unearthed there, belonging to the “Red-Painted People” who traveled through the area from about 5,000 to 1,000 B.C. The gravesite was established sometime around 3,600 B.C.

In the protected area there is a small walkway through the parcel that has several different trees in it, said Levine.

“It’s a refuge in the middle of Brattleboro. Not a lot of people know about it.”

The name of the parcel is the Grove Refuge.

In the backyard of the 40 Putney Road Bed and Breakfast is a very large Japanese Maple. The owners of the lodging establishment, Tim and Amy Brady, agreed to let the tree committee add the maple to the Treasured Tree Walk.

“They are allowing people to go and visit it,” said Levine.

“We believe it might be the largest Japanese Maple in North America,” said Tim Brady. It’s at least the largest in New England, according to an expert who took a look at it six years ago.

The 2.25-mile trail is “easy,” said Levine, and starts at the American Sycamore tree at Harris Place.

The Sycamore is like a beacon, said Brattleboro resident Chuck Hornsby, “reflecting the late afternoon sun off its light gray/white trunk and limbs. In the moonlight, it seems to glow.”

From Harris Place, the walk winds its way to Putney Road, Main Street, Grove Street, Oak Street and High Street.

“It’s a loop trail,” she said.

If you are interested in seeing our tree, please walk down the driveway and view from the parking area, or take the stone path to the lower gardens. There is no parking available at our inn for non-guests (sorry but we have a very small parking area).

Amy and I have always been environmentally sensitive. When we decided to start a business we were committed to putting the environmental impact of our decision making high on our list of priorities. After a long search over 2 years ago, we were thrilled to find a property as beautiful as Forty Putney Road in a town as cool as Brattleboro.

From the outset the property needed a lot of work, and we took that opportunity to make as many “green” decisions as possible in the renovating and repairs. When we heard that the state was offering energy audits and launching a “green certification” we jumped on the opportunity to participate.

We applied for the Green Hotels in the Green Mountain State Program a program run by the Department of Environmental Conservation through the state of Vermont. After a series of audits, crafting our environmental policy and adding some new initiatives to our existing plan – we were welcomed as a Green Hotel in the Green Mountain State.

Recently, the Governor recognized the lodging properties that have taken these initiatives and we were honored to be included. We are even more proud to be living and working in a state that puts an obvious focus on the environment. We have a host of new initiatives planned for 2009, including finally replacing our dated boiler and creating zoned heating. While our little inn certainly won’t make much of a global impact, we are committed to doing our part and are grateful for the State’s support of small businesses like ours in being green.

Below is the article from the Brattleboro Reformer on Friday May 1st, 2009:

Friday, May 1

BRATTLEBORO — The 40 Putney Road Bed and Breakfast may be a green hotel, but we’re not talking about the building’s exterior paint. The inn, and four other lodging establishments in Windham County, are members of Green Hotels in the Green Mountain State, a joint program of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation and the Vermont Small Business Development Center.

Green Hotels is a voluntary environmental program for lodging facilities created in 1998 to promote and advance environmentally, and fiscally, sound practices at inns and hotels in Vermont.

More than 92 lodging establishments have been designated green hotels since the program began.

“We have a lot of green initiatives in place right now,” said Tim Brady, who owns 40 Putney Road with his wife, Amy.

Just as with the four other recognized inns in Windham County, some of those initiatives include ditching bottled water, encouraging guests to reuse towels and linens, using green cleaning agents, replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lightbulbs and installing a rainwater collection system to water the inn’s garden.

In place of bottled water, the Bradys offer refillable sealed glass water carafes, filled with spring water, in each room.

“We will also be offering sport bottles to guests this summer,” he said.

The other recognized inns in the county are the Hermitage Inn and the Inn at Mount Snowin West Dover, the Inn at Stratton Mountain in Stratton and the Readmore Bed, Breakfast and Books in Bellows Falls. The Bradys got started greening their inn by reinsulating the building and reglazing the windows.

“Those projects got us involved in the green initiatives,” he said.

They wanted to install solar panels to augment power taken from the grid, but Tim Brady was concerned about the damage that might happen to the building’s slate roof if a solar array were mounted there.

As a business, said Brady, they have a responsibility not only to minimize their impact on the environment but also to make environmental policy a key and integral part of their business strategy.

“It’s really good that the state of Vermont has this program,” said Dorothy Read, who with her husband, Stewart, owns the Readmore.

The Reads had instituted many of the initiatives suggested by Green Hotels for the Green Mountain State prior to its enlistment in the program, she said.

In addition to the things the Bradys are doing at 40 Putney Road, the Reads have installed an energy efficient furnace and soap dispensers in the bathrooms instead of individually wrapped bars of soap.

“It’s a lot of little things,” said Read, who uses the inn’s compost in its flower garden. “It’s a lot of common sense things.”

The Readmore is also a member of the Vermont Fresh Network, which partners restaurants and inns with local farmers.

“We use as much local food and dairy as possible,” said Read.

For the past seven years, she and her husband have operated the Readmore, and being a green hotel is definitely good for business, she said.

“We have many guests who come here specifically because we are a green hotel.”

That holds true for the Inn at Mount Snow as well, said Glenda Belicove, the innkeeper.

“Some of my return guests have commented on the fact that they are pleased we are a green hotel.”

The green initiatives are a way the inn’s owners can lessen their impact on the local and global environment by conserving energy, water and other natural resources; reducing waste generation; recycling and purchasing recycled products; and reducing our use of toxic materials.

Among the projects taken on at the Hermitage Inn is a solar array, designed to not only supply power to the inn but also to the grid during low-usage times.

“The companies and organizations represented today are leaders in what I call the Vermont Way — where our economic and environmental heritage are inextricably intertwined,” said Gov. James Douglas, during a ceremony earlier this month to honor green businesses.

The Bradys also hope to one day purchase energy from environmentally friendly sources such as Central Vermont Public Service’s “Cow Power” program.

Forty Putney Road has a small garden, where the Bradys grow herbs and spices, tomatoes and flowers.

“We compost everything possible and have a robust recycling programming,” said Brady.

The inn, which the Bradys bought in 2007, has six guest rooms.

The Bradys, from the Philadelphia area, wanted to run their own business and decided, because Amy enjoys cooking, that they would like to open a bed and breakfast.

They had visited Brattleboro before and when the heard 40 Putney Road was up for sale, they jumped at their chance.

“It’s such a cool town and we knew we could totally live there,” he said.

One of the best things about the inn, said Brady, was the fact it had a small pub.

The Bradys offer about 30 beers and wine for their guests and host beer tastings on Saturday evenings. The beer tastings are open to the public, but because seating is limited to 12 people, Tim asks that anyone interested call ahead to make sure there is room.

Wouldn’t you love to start your vacation a bit early? Wouldn’t you like to avoid the hassle, stress and expense of driving or flying somewhere? Well if Vermont is on your list of places to visit (and I hope it is), and you live on the east coast, why not try the Vermonter from Amtrak?

There are many benefits to taking the Vermonter. The first is your vacation begins the moment you get on the train. No traffic, no chaotic terminals and transfers and if you take off your shoes on this trip, it will be on your own terms… Just park your car, climb on board and let the relaxing begin.

Sit back and read a book, put on you headphones and listen to some music or bring your laptop and catch up on your movie watching or that TV series you missed last year. The chairs are large and comfortable, they recline and they even have a foot rest. The coach seating on the Vermonter beats most airlines first class. There is a snack car which serves beer and wine at very reasonable prices as well as sandwiches, even hamburgers and pizza. One very important tip however, is that while the snack car is a great place to grab a drink, I really can’t recommend the food. The only decent thing I have found on the menu is the cheese plate (prepackaged cheese and crackers). Your best bet is to pack a lunch or pick up some sandwiches before you get on the train.

By taking the Vermonter you can avoid all of the stress associated with driving. No traffic, searching for restrooms, arguments about directions, or wrong turns. Best of all, you will arrive at your destination already relaxed rather than spending your whole first day recovering from your drive. If you book early, your tickets may even cost less than the gas it would take to fill your tank (A ticket from Philadelphia to Brattleboro will run you about $55). This is a savings for you and the environment, and we all love a win – win.

If you are worried about how you will get around while you are here in Brattleboro, relax. The train station is downtown and only about 8 blocks away from our beautiful Vermont Inn. We are happy to swing down and pick our guests up at the train. And of course, if you decide that you have to leave our amazing town, we will even drop you back off.

Brattleboro is a very pedestrian friendly town and our location will put you in the heart of so many things to do in walking distance. You can walk to and enjoy everything from hiking, bike rentals, canoe and kayak rentals, shopping and dining. If you are not much for walking than give Brattleboro Taxi a call, they are sure to get you where you want to go. So when you are making your vacation plans or your plans to see the Fall Foliage, take a look at the Vermonter and arrive at Forty Putney Road Bed and Breakfast without all of the stress of travel.

Surprised, I asked what the article was about. He answered “All of your naked people”.

Of course, this was both a surprise, and not. It seems that in recent months, Brattleboro has been getting a lot of attention for some rather off-beat news. As a matter of fact, a quick search shows that Brattleboro has appeared in Reuters Oddly Enough (an RSS feed I subscribe to) 5 times in the last 6 months.

In case you missed the controversy about the nudity in Brattleboro, I will give you a short recap. (You can read the whole WSJ article here if you’d prefer). About 2 years ago, some teenagers were goofing around on one of the rare “hot” days in Vermont. They got naked (after learning that there is no anti-nudity law in Vermont) and were playing some instruments on the town green, in the Gazebo. An AP photographer was up here on vacation and staged a photo with them covering all of their **ummm… parts** with instruments and the like. He uploaded his photo and lo and behold, it got picked up by hundreds of local papers as a human interest story.

Well, things were rather quiet at the outset. The summer came and went and it seemed that other than some funny conversations and emails, there was little backlash.

Of course, the next summer (2007) the word had spread and nudists started trekking their way to Brattleboro. There was one older gentleman who we would often see bicycling with nothing on other than a fluorescent pink fanny pack, downtown past our Inn. He was harmless enough and clearly made for some interesting conversations in our pub! Unfotunately from there, things started to get out of control. PETA was starting to take advantage of the opportunity and staged naked protests in the downtown park. Nudists were coming up on trips to stroll the downtown together. It was really odd, and admittedly I will say that (other than the PETA models perhaps) not much to look at…

Ultimately after much debate (read – months of discussions and public hearings) an ordinance was passed making it illegal to be naked in Brattleboro any longer. Punishment – “An officer of the law is to order you to clothe”. Failure to obey of course could result in a $25 fine (or you could be tasered – so just get dressed!).

I honestly thought that this was all said and done, until this new article in the WSJ. It was a pretty level headed and well done article, but I wonder what the inspiration was. Anyhow, for those headed up to visit us at Forty Putney Road, or to Brattleboro in general: just remember, you will have to keep your clothes on when visiting downtown. Of course, if you are into nude bathing, we have a few swimming holes that we would be happy to give you directions to that we wont be listing on the blog – we don’t want to be the source of this years debate!

You may be wondering what is PAII? You may have seen their logo on many Bed and Breakfast websites. PAII is a national organization for B&Bs and full service Inns. This organization provides innkeepers with education allowing us to stay in tune with new trends in the industry.

This was our first PAII conference; we had a blast and learned a lot. We even had enough time to check out Disney World. The conference included educational sessions in many aspects of innkeeping including marketing, operations, technology, legal, financial and of course breakfast. The conference also included a trade show, we were able to purchase some great items for the Bed and Breakfast.

Of course it wasnt all work! Tim entered the Idea Fair before we left, his idea along with 14 others was chosen to be presented and voted on at the Conference. Tims great idea was to automate the lights, thermostats, and fireplaces in the guest rooms. For example, we currently only push one button to turn all of the lamps in our living room and breakfast room. It is a great way to save time and energy. We love saving energy up here in Vermont, it is how we keep Vermont greener then the rest of the country. Tim WON the contest with his smooth presentation and great idea. We won 3 Roomba Vacuum Cleaners from iRobot!!!

We also attended PAIIs Birthday Bash. They were celebrating their 20 year Anniversary with a party complete with drinks, dessert and games. Since we are not much for musical chairs, I entered the hula hoop contest. I was a finalist! Unfortunately there were some better hula hoopers then me. Well you win some and you lose some.
