Ski Jumping in Vermont

Posted by Tim Brady on Feb 14 2009 | February Events, Winter Activities

This weekend marked the official re-opening of the Harris Hill Ski Jump here in Brattlebro, Vermont. The jump is the only 90 meter ski jump in New England and one of only six in the USA of this size and caliber. The jump had closed in 2005 and needed significant repair work to reopen. But with the support of the local and even international community, they were able to complete an extensive renovation of the jump and returned the site to a first-class venue in the sport of ski jumping. Harris Hill is a symbol of pride for the Brattleboro community and throughout the Northeast.

We had never been to a ski jump competition, and didn’t know what to expect. Even though we can see the jump from our back yard, it is truly impressive to stand at the bottom of the slope and look up at the jumpers as they fly down the ramp and into the air. Many traveled 90 meters or more, with some even breaking into the triple digits.

Overall it was an impressive display and another cool event hosted by the amazing Brattleboro community. Check out the video (the first we have done for this blog – so its a work in progress!). And of course, if you are headed to Brattleboro for this or any of the other great events in the area, look us up at Forty Putney Road B&B for a great place to stay.

For more information about the ski jump visit the Harris Hill Ski Jump website.

Skiing at Mount Snow

Posted by Tim Brady on Dec 17 2007 | Winter Activities

With all of the great snow that we have been getting, the mountains are all open and the conditions are great! We made it out to Mount Snow this past weekend (Mount Snow is an easy 20 minute ride from here on the well cleared Route 9). The conditions were great and almost the whole mountain was open (rare for this early in the season). After this weeks new snowfall…
img_0876After this weeks new snowfall of almost 16 more inches of powder, we hear that the whole mountain is open and all the lifts are running. We only did a 1/2 day on this trip, Amy was learning to ski at ski school with a friend of ours from New Jersey, but it was enough time to get out and get back into the swing of things. Its been a while for me, I haven’t skied in quite some time. Mount Snow offers a lot of great trail choices though, so I was able to start slow and work up. Of course, except for when I followed my far more ski proficient friend up a lift that left me with only 2 expert trails to chose from. And I chose the wrong one – the Challenger… Mogul covered and extremely steep, it was not for me… But I made it to the bottom and headed right back up to a more appropriate blue trail! Overall great day and can’t wait to get back up there.
