Or driving in the snow? Hate relying on last minute weather forecasts to dictate your weekend plans? Look no further …. We innkeepers here at 40 Putney Road B&B have a solution…. (da da daaaaaa) Take the Vermonter! Amtrak’s New England rail line, the Vermonter, goes from D.C. all the way to St. Albans VT, stopping right in the heart of downtown Brattleboro, in southern Vermont around 5:30ish pm every day. But what happens when you get to Brattleboro without a car?

The Vermonter stops at the Brattleboro Train Station placing you steps away from food, drinks, arts and culture. Whether it’s brick oven pizza, local flair or delectable Mayan cuisine, there’s something for your tastes within walking distance of the train and our inn. (Want to drop off the bags or freshen up before dinner? Call us, we’ll pick you up from the train at no charge.) There’s always action in downtown Brattleboro, but for you city folks who want to reconnect with nature (or the slopes), taking the Vermonter in the winter is still a great option.

From when the snow begins to fall until spring, Burrows Sports in downtown Brattleboro rents snow shoes and cross country skis. The Retreat Grounds and Solar Hill are minutes away from downtown with entry to intermediate level trails. Ever been ice fishing before? The retreat meadows are prime fishing grounds once the ice is thick enough, or your brave enough. Even better, you can see it from our backyard! Want to take the Vermonter and still hit the big slopes? The Moover (a bus painted like a cow) takes free daily trips to Mount Snow from Brattleboro.

If you’re like me, you might just stay where it’s warm and watch the ice fishing from our sun porch with a good book or enjoy a great local beer at our pub. Either way, taking the Vermonter to Brattleboro is an easy and dependable way to take a winter trip. Call us for reservations and more info about taking the train to Brattleboro. And remember, as always, we are happy to pick you up and drop you off at the station for no charge. Hope to see you in Brattleboro this winter!

We like to consider ourselves environmentally conscious innkeepers, so we made a list of summertime things to do if you take the train to Brattleboro and don’t have wheels (or at least a car). The Vermonter rail line is one of New England’s fastest growing and easiest ways to travel with a stop right here in the heart of downtown Brattleboro, Vermont. Amtrak connects some of our favorite cities such as D.C., New York City, Philly, Boston and Burlington to our hub here in southern Vermont. Leave the car at home! There’s plenty to do on foot, bike and canoe.

If the Vermonter helped you escape from the city, get off the train (arrives at around 5:30ish) and head east over the bridge to Mount Wantastiquetfor a beautiful nature walk or sunset hike with views of downtown. Of course,we are happy to pick up our guests at the train station, or it’s an easy walk to our inn.

If you head west from the Brattleboro train “station” (more like parking area), you’ll find shopping, dining, theaters and galleries. You’ll also find Burrows sports, a sporting goods store supplying reasonably priced bike rentals and gear for outdoor activities. Rent a bike for one of the local easiest ways to travel and open up even more entertainment options beyond downtown. The Saturday farmers market, located in West Brattleboro, has food, artisan crafts, culture and amazing produce. Just up Route 30 along the West River sits Grafton Cheese, waterfalls and swimming holes. If you’re looking to get on the water, you can rent kayaks, canoes, tubes and fishing poles just a few blocks North of the inn.

What better way to escape than one of the easiest ways to travel – a stress-free train ride that drops you off in heart of downtown Brattleboro? Our inn is a short walk from the train station or a phone call away if you’d rather have a ride. (It’s partially uphill, we understand.) So, leave the car at home and enjoy a train ride on the Vermonter!

The jump is the only 90 meter ski jump in New England and one of only six in the USA of this size and caliber. The jump had closed in 2005 and needed significant repair work to reopen. But with the support of the local and even international community, they were able to complete an extensive renovation of the jump and returned the site to a first-class venue in the sport of ski jumping. Harris Hill is a symbol of pride for the Brattleboro community and throughout the Northeast.

We had never been to a ski jump competition, and didn’t know what to expect. Even though we can see the jump from our back yard, it is truly impressive to stand at the bottom of the slope and look up at the jumpers as they fly down the ramp and into the air. Many traveled 90 meters or more, with some even breaking into the triple digits.

Overall it was an impressive display and another cool event hosted by the amazing Brattleboro community. Check out the video (the first we have done for this blog – so its a work in progress!). And of course, if you are headed to Brattleboro for this or any of the other great events in the area, look us up at Forty Putney Road B&B for a great place to stay.

For more information about the ski jump visit the Harris Hill Ski Jump website.

With all of the great snow that we have been getting, the mountains are all open and the conditions are great! We made it out to Mount Snow this past weekend (Mount Snow is an easy 20 minute ride from here on the well cleared Route 9). The conditions were great and almost the whole mountain was open (rare for this early in the season). After this weeks new snowfall…
After this weeks new snowfall of almost 16 more inches of powder, we hear that the whole mountain is open and all the lifts are running. We only did a 1/2 day on this trip, Amy was learning to ski at ski school with a friend of ours from New Jersey, but it was enough time to get out and get back into the swing of things. Its been a while for me, I haven’t skied in quite some time. Mount Snow offers a lot of great trail choices though, so I was able to start slow and work up. Of course, except for when I followed my far more ski proficient friend up a lift that left me with only 2 expert trails to chose from. And I chose the wrong one – the Challenger… Mogul covered and extremely steep, it was not for me… But I made it to the bottom and headed right back up to a more appropriate blue trail! Overall great day and can’t wait to get back up there.
