Shopping in Brattleboro is always an adventure with all the unique, locally owned stores downtown. Each store depicts its own distinct character and a Vermont-esque vibe, especially Twice Upon a Time, an eclectic consignment shop in downtown Brattleboro. Twice Upon a Time sits on the southern end of downtown amongst other antique furniture shops and vintage clothing stores. It’s a short walk from our inn and a great place to visit on a weekly basis as their stock is constantly changing. This includes the storefront display featuring hilarious manikins wearing ridiculous clothes, one of kind antique furniture, designer chairs only found NYC lofts, or eccentric hat racks from an estate sale. You name it; this crazy downtown consignment shop more than likely has it.

We always describe the uniquely odd (in a good way) Brattleboro culture, but Twice Upon a Time makes the case more so than any other store. It’s not just merchandise, but keepsakes, antique furniture, jewelry, dishware, decor, clothes and “stuff” with a story, many of which came from the characters living here in southern Vermont. Vendors stalls line the isles with pieces from 1 to 100 years old. I can’t think of a better place to get a Halloween costume or a store that has such an incredible selection, anywhere, much less in downtown Brattleboro. Twice Upon A Time has giant hats for Sunday brunch (feel free to bring yours) and Fiesta Ware to match. The shelves are stocked with books, cowboy boots, kimonos, vintage ashtrays – a tough find even at the flea market.

We moved to Brattleboro to buy our inn, 40 Putney Road, after months of looking for a fun and interesting place to live. Twice Upon a Time says it all. Brattleboro’s eclectic culture can be seen all over downtown in the people, the home goods, the clothes, the shopping, the food, the books and the art and architecture. Twice Upon A Time is one of our favorite consignment shops…. in the lower 48! Stop by downtown Brattleboro and see for yourself.

The Marina Restaurant is open for business! Just a short walk from our Brattleboro inn, the Marina is a go-to restaurant for anyone looking for outdoor dining in southern Vermont. After a devastating fire in July 2010, the Marina closed its doors in hopes of rebuilding one of the only waterfront restaurants in Brattleboro. Today, the Marina is not only bigger and nicer; the food selection is just as good and the waterfront view, even better.

The Marina Restaurant sits near the intersection of the West and Connecticut Rivers just north of downtown Brattleboro. With Mt. Wantastiquet on one side and the Green Mountains on the other, the Marina’s view overlooking the Retreat Meadow is always great, but unbeatable during fall foliage. Dock space allows boats, kayaks and canoes to stop in during the warmer months for a delicious Vermont Beer or one of the seafood favorites. tubing down the West River? What better way to end a day on the water than at a beachy waterfront restaurant in Brattleboro? Although we can’t say there’s a beach, we can mention the waterfront view. Did we mention that already?

Not only is the Marina one of our favorite restaurants with outside dining, the newly designed space brings the outdoors in with lively colors and a friendly, laid-back vibe. The huge windows bring in the breeze and outside dining allows guests to bask in the sun. Hawaiian shirts, fish jumping, the cool Vermont breeze, a refreshing McNeill\’s brew and the sun setting over the Retreat Meadow … does it get any better? Whether it’s a casual dining in southern Vermont with the family, or girls night on the town, the Marina appeals the casual crowd looking for fun, food and, of course, a view. Visit Brattleboro and the Marina Restaurant for the day or stay overnight at our inn in southern Vermont!

Cheers!

Sam’s has three locations with the original here in downtown Brattleboro. Originally started in 1932 as an Army and Navy surplus store, Sam’s Outdoor Store now provides outdoor gear, basic appearal, footwear, sporting goods, maple syrupand “quality brands at affordable prices” in downtown Brattleboro.

In addition to the basics, Sam’s Outdoor Store also carries what we like to call “survival gear”. This isn’t just outdoor gear. And who doesn’t need gear, right? Sam’s carries everything you need for outdoor adventures to hikingthe Green Mountains (and getting lost for a month) or climb Mount Everest. Thinking of living off the land as many enjoy doing here in Vermont? Sam’s carries fishing poles and Vermont fishinglicenses; anything guns and ammo; -40 degree sleeping bags; the strongest tick and mosquito repellent on the market; tents; anything fire; raincoats; and…. need we say more? Sounds like a manly shopping paradise all in one store.

On one occasion, “John”, a staff member here in the Brattleboro store, spent over 40 minutes seeking out a jacket for a customer to find they didn’t make the specific style they were looking for. The next day John called them directly to say they found an almost identical match. John went above and beyond and for that, we like to keep it local.

Shopping in Brattleboro isn’t just for the girls and even appeals to kids with their free popcorn. As a side note, Sam’s has some of the best popcorn in Brattleboro (although the Latchis is a close second). Popcorn and Patagonia fit perfect together at Sam’s. Check out Sam’s Outdoor Store in downtown Brattleboro just a short walk from our inn and check out their website for deals and steals!

We like to consider ourselves environmentally conscious innkeepers, so we made a list of summertime things to do if you take the train to Brattleboro and don’t have wheels (or at least a car). The Vermonter rail line is one of New England’s fastest growing and easiest ways to travel with a stop right here in the heart of downtown Brattleboro, Vermont. Amtrak connects some of our favorite cities such as D.C., New York City, Philly, Boston and Burlington to our hub here in southern Vermont. Leave the car at home! There’s plenty to do on foot, bike and canoe.

If the Vermonter helped you escape from the city, get off the train (arrives at around 5:30ish) and head east over the bridge to Mount Wantastiquetfor a beautiful nature walk or sunset hike with views of downtown. Of course,we are happy to pick up our guests at the train station, or it’s an easy walk to our inn.

If you head west from the Brattleboro train “station” (more like parking area), you’ll find shopping, dining, theaters and galleries. You’ll also find Burrows sports, a sporting goods store supplying reasonably priced bike rentals and gear for outdoor activities. Rent a bike for one of the local easiest ways to travel and open up even more entertainment options beyond downtown. The Saturday farmers market, located in West Brattleboro, has food, artisan crafts, culture and amazing produce. Just up Route 30 along the West River sits Grafton Cheese, waterfalls and swimming holes. If you’re looking to get on the water, you can rent kayaks, canoes, tubes and fishing poles just a few blocks North of the inn.

What better way to escape than one of the easiest ways to travel – a stress-free train ride that drops you off in heart of downtown Brattleboro? Our inn is a short walk from the train station or a phone call away if you’d rather have a ride. (It’s partially uphill, we understand.) So, leave the car at home and enjoy a train ride on the Vermonter!

There is something about the feeling of being outside in the Vermont winter. The crisp clean country air and the peaceful silence that comes with a soft snowfall. One great way to get outside and experience this serenity is snow shoeing. Lucky for us, there are plenty of great cross-country ski trails around Brattleboro that also make fore a snowshoers paradise. As a matter of fact, you can snowshoe almost 15 miles of trails right from the backyard of our Brattleboro Inn! But there are also several nearby locations that are well suited for all snowshoeing skill levels.

For first timers, check out the Brattleboro Outing Club. The outing club sets up shop in the winter on the golf course, creating a 14km system of trails for cross country skiing and snowshoeing throughout the picturesque hilly country club. They even rent equipment and offer lessons right on site on the weekends. The outing club is located just across the water from our inn, on Upper Dummerston Road.

If you are looking for something a bit more challenging, or a nice afternoon trip, check out Grafton Ponds. Grafton Ponds is located in Grafton Vermont, about 25 miles up Route 30 (to Rt 35, to Townshend Road). A bit bigger than the outing club, and with snow making equipment and groomed trails, Grafton Ponds is a local favorite for a serious day on the trails. Grafton Ponds rents equipment, offers lessons, guided tours and even snow tubing. All situated in a picturesque community in rural Vermont.

For those who already have equipment or prefer the “wild” side of getting out on a mountain, the Kilburn Loop trail in nearby New Hampshire’s Pisgah State Park should certainly fit the bill. Pisgah State Park has 13,500 acres of forest and covers more than twenty-one square miles. Trails roam for miles in the park and six different trailheads leading into the park each allow for a specific use such as snowmobiling, or snowshoeing.

Of the trails, the Kilburn Loop is for skiing and snowshoeing as motorized vehicles are prohibited to protect these ungroomed trails. The trail itself is five miles long and loopy. While the trail is rather steep at times, it is also picturesque and offers a series of rewarding views and places to pause.

Sure Pisgah State Park and the Kilburn Loop are a challenge, but a fun one. If you don’t have your own snowshoes, the Outing Club mentioned earlier rents them on site (on the weekends) as does Burrows Specialized Sports in downtown Brattleboro.

Any way you try it, snowshoeing is a great way to spend an afternoon staying active in the winter. And Brattleboro is a great base for any snowshoeing adventure.

I am all about spending a sunny summer day outside as you can see from the video above. One of my favorite leisurely outdoor activities is tubing on the West River in Southern Vermont. The best part is the tube rental and the river are located very close to our Bed and Breakfast. The West River is great for tubing as it is not too deep, the water is moving at a good speed, and it offers variety. In some spots you are just floating along while in others you are gently bumping your way through the large smooth river rocks. What a relaxing way to spend a hot summer day.

If you are planning a trip to Brattleboro and you choose to stay with us here at Forty Putney Road B&B, we can help you with your tubing adventure. We will direct you to the tube rental (Vermont Canoe Touring Center 802-257-5008) to pick up a tub and life jacket, you can follow us in your car to the ending point where you will leave your car, we will then drive you and your tubes to the launch site. The launch site is located at the West Dummerston Covered Bridge this trip will take you about 2 hours depending on the speed of the current. Then all you have to do is float down the river and get out at the nearby swimming hole where your car will be parked. What do you need to bring? We suggest water shoes and sunscreen. You will find beach towels at our B&B that you can borrow. So cool off this summer in a tube on the West River – and at Forty Putney Road B&B!

Wantastiquet in Hinsdale, NH is just a short walk from downtown Brattleboro, VT and is one of our favorite simple hikes. It’s easily walkable from our Vermont B&B, and offers 3 great choices for hiking.

Start by walking downtown and crossing the steel bridge into New Hampshire. Make the first left and follow that dirt road to the end. You’ll see a small parking area, where you can head off in several directions.

When we want to take a leisurely stroll with the dog we head to the left and take the nearly flat walk along the Connecticut River.

When we are looking to build some endurance we will head up the hill to the right, and take the winding switchback style jeep trail to the top of the mountain. This trail is pretty gradual, but a steady climb. We would label it as a moderate hike, and it takes about three hours from our front door to the top and back.

Finally, if we are short on time, we will take the short cut straight up the mountain which is much steeper, but shorter. We would label that path moderately difficult, this trail only take about two hours from our door step and back.

Both the switchback and the short cut will take you to a clearing at the top where you will see panoramic views of Brattleboro and the river valley. Even on a hazy day you can see our slate roof peaking out over the trees and our huge Japanese Maple with its bright red leaves, in the back yard.

If you are really looking for a longer adventure, venture over the top of the mountain and hike the backside down all the way to the old “Castle” (see our haunted hike). Be warned though, that is a long trek.

When you come off of the mountain, you walk back to the Inn through downtown, where you can stop to enjoy a well deserved lunch. This certainly makes Mount Wantastiquet a great local hike and one of the many reasons we love living in Brattleboro.

For more great Brattleboro area activities, be sure to keep an eye on our blog at InnBrattleboro.com!
